Tipu Sultan wanted to cultivate economically and politically viable relations with Indian and foreign rulers to make Mysore state prosperous. The military victories of Tipu over the Maratha-Nizam combination changed the views of French and they wanted an alliance with Tipu. Tipu viewed the expansion of the British in the East as a threat to Indian sovereignty. Tipu was a great diplomat and his diplomacy could well be seen in his relations with the foreign powers. Tipu Sultan's intense diplomatic activity with Oman, Persia and others, which had essentially political, economic and military considerations, not only showed his desire to keep up contacts with influential rulers but also to seek allies against the British. A close examination of Tipu's rule reveals that Tipu had fought against the colonial forces as a valiant warrior. He pursued diplomatic efforts in India and abroad mainly to defeat the British who were the most formidable adversary of India.
